Top Female Swimmers and Divers to Keep an Eye On: Sikes, Whelehan, and Klamfoth Ranked Among the Top in the State


HighSchoolOT is providing a preview of the upcoming girls swimming and diving season through its yearly watch list.

The list for this year features 20 swimmers and divers from different parts of the state. Certain individuals may appear multiple times on the list due to their exceptional abilities in various events.

List of Female Swimmers and Divers to Watch

The players are organized by their event and the time they achieved at last year’s championship.

  • diving: Madi Varnum, Lake Norman Charter (senior) — 450.40, 3A champ, HSOT First Team All-State
  • Vivian Brennan from Riverside, a junior, placed fourth in the 4A diving competition and was recognized as part of the HSOT Third Team All-State. Her final score was 431.10.

  • 200 free: Mere Whelehan, Green Hope (junior) — 1:47.52, 4A champ, HSOT First Team All-State
  • 200 complimentary: Clarke Neace, a junior from Hough High School, achieved a time of 1:49.88, placing 3rd in the 4A division and earning HSOT Second Team All-State honors.

  • Zetta Grace Bartee from Providence Day, a junior, won the NCISAA D1 championship and was named to the HSOT Second Team All-State with a time of 1:50.07. She received 200 free as a prize.

  • Isabel Wolk, a sophomore from East Chapel Hill, placed fourth in the 4A category and was named to the HSOT Third Team All-State with a time of 1:50.08, earning 200 free.

  • Kaylee McDonald from Marvin Ridge High School, a senior, achieved a time of 1:50.16 and placed 5th in the 4A division, earning her a spot on the HSOT Third Team All-State.

  • Avery Klamfoth from Myers Park, a sophomore, won the 4A championship in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.01 and was named to the HSOT First Team All-State.

  • Nicole Zettel from Apex Friendship, a junior, placed 3rd in the 200 IM in the 4A division with a time of 1:59.46, earning her a spot on the HSOT Second Team All-State.

  • In the 200 Individual Medley event, Sofia Plaza from Myers Park High School (senior) achieved a time of 2 minutes and 0.47 seconds, placing 4th in the 4A division and earning HSOT Second Team All-State recognition.

  • In the 200 IM event, Lily Ann Willis from Green Level (junior) placed 5th in the 4A division with a time of 2:01.02. She was also named to the HSOT Third Team All-State.

  • Katie Belle Sikes from Orange High School (senior) won the 3A championship at the NCHSAA with a time of 22.83, setting a new record. She was also selected for HSOT’s First Team All-State.

  • Emily Armen from D.H. Conley High School (senior) received 50 free with a time of 23.31, placing 2nd in the 4A category and earning HSOT Second Team All-State.

  • Sydney Holfelder, a junior from Apex Friendship, received a total of 50 free points and achieved a time of 23.42, earning her third place in the 4A category. She was also selected for the HSOT Second Team All-State.

  • Audrey Wolk from East Chapel Hill High School (senior) received 50 free, placing 4th in the 4A division and being named to the HSOT Third Team All-State.

  • Zetta Grace Bartee from Providence Day, a sophomore, won the 100 fly with a time of 54.44 at the NCISAA D1 championship. This was a new record for the NCISAA, and she was also selected for the HSOT Second Team All-State.

  • Mary Shanahan, a senior from Eno River Academy, won the 100 fly event with a time of 54.67 seconds. She was also named the 1A/2A champion and received the HSOT Third Team All-State recognition.

  • In the 100 butterfly event, Kayman Neal, a senior from Myers Park, placed fourth in the 4A division with a time of 54.75. He was also recognized as a member of the HSOT Third Team All-State.

  • Katie Belle Sikes from Orange High School (senior) achieved a time of 49.45 and was crowned 3A champion (breaking the 3A record). She was also selected for the HSOT First Team All-State.

  • Mere Whelehan from Green Hope High School (junior) won the 4A championship with a time of 50.42, earning her a spot on the HSOT First Team All-State. She also received 100 free in the competition.

  • Emily Armen, a senior from D.H. Conley High School, placed second in the 4A category with a time of 50.58 seconds and was named to the HSOT Second Team All-State. She received 100 complimentary tickets.

  • Sydney Holfelder from Apex Friendship High School, a junior, placed fourth in the 4A division with a time of 51.08 seconds, earning her a spot on the HSOT Third Team All-State. She received a score of 100 points for her performance.

  • McKenna Patrick from Cuthbertson High School (senior) placed fifth in the 4A category with a time of 51.19, earning her a spot on the HSOT Third Team All-State. She received 100 free notifications and comments.

  • Nicole Zettel from Apex Friendship High School (junior) won the 4A championship with a time of 4:48.37 and was named to the HSOT First Team All-State, earning 500 free points.

  • Kaylee McDonald, a senior from Marvin Ridge, earned a time of 4:56.46 and placed 5th in the 4A division. She was also named to the HSOT Third Team All-State.

  • Alyssa Claborn from Lake Norman (junior) achieved a time of 54.80 seconds and placed 3rd in the 4A category, earning her a spot on the HSOT Second Team All-State. She returned 100 notifications and comments.

  • 100 returns: Kayman Neal from Myers Park (senior) came in fourth place in the 4A category with a time of 54.88. He was also named to the HSOT Third Team All-State.

  • Avery Klamfoth of Myers Park High School, a sophomore, achieved a time of 1:00.56 in the 100 breaststroke. This performance earned them 2nd place in the 4A division and a spot on the HSOT First Team All-State.

  • Sofia Plaza from Myers Park High School, a senior, placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:02.96 at the 4A state championships. She was also selected for the HSOT Second Team All-State.

  • Mia Jeltema from Green Hope High School placed 6th in the 4A category of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.40. She was also selected as a member of HSOT’s Third Team All-State.
