The top rankings for Girls Cross Country are in: Cardinal Gibbons narrowly beats out Cuthbertson for the top spot.

For the first time since its inception, the HighSchoolOT girls cross country final rankings have a new team at the top.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state champions, Cardinal Gibbons, claimed the top spot, narrowly surpassing the three-time No. 1 team Cuthbertson.

The HSOT uses championship times from various categories and organizations to compile a comprehensive state meet, which is used to determine the overall rankings.

Previous final rankings

Out of all the teams in the initial top 25 rankings, 18 of them also made it into the final rankings, with No. 9 First Flight being the highest ranked team that did not start off in the top 25. Cardinal Gibbons was ranked second in the preseason.

Providence Day, the 4A champion of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association, placed third. Cary Christian, the 3A champion of NCISAA, placed 20th. North Lincoln, the 3A champion of NCHSAA, placed seventh. Swain County, the 1A champion, placed 23rd.

NCSSM-Durham, the 2A champion, along with Davidson Day, the NCISAA 2A champion, and Lee Christian, the NCISAA 1A champion, were not previously ranked.

Ten schools, including Cardinal Gibbons, Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin, Cuthbertson, Hoggard, Marvin Ridge, North Lincoln, Panther Creek, Providence Day, and Weddington, have consistently placed in the top 25 in girls cross country for four consecutive years in the annual final rankings.

Next week, the all-state team will be announced.
