Pinecrest successfully secures the NCHSAA 4A girls golf championship once again, while Northwest Guilford’s Leah Edwards emerges as the individual medalist after winning a playoff hole.


Pinecrest has achieved a 10-stroke victory at this year’s 4A championships held at Pinehurst No. 6, resulting in them being tied for the most N.C. High School Athletic Association girls golf titles.

The Patriots, situated in close proximity to Pinehurst, have achieved consecutive championships and three in the past five years. Despite having a five-stroke lead after day one with a combined score of 3-over 219, the Patriots recorded a 14-over team score on day two to fend off their opponents and ultimately finish with 449 strokes.

Pinecrest and Salisbury are tied with six all-time championships. Additionally, Pinecrest has achieved championship victories in 1987, 2001, 2016, 2019, and 2022.

Northwest Guilford came in second place with a score of 459, closely followed by Marvin Ridge with 461 strokes. Jordan and Myers Park completed the top five, with less than a 20-stroke difference between them.

The individual finals were decided in a close match between Myers Park’s Elizabeth Rudisill, the current champion, and Northwest Guilford’s Leah Edwards. They had to go to a playoff to determine the winner of the individual championship.

Edwards emerged victorious, becoming the first individual champion in the sport for the Vikings. In the previous year, as a junior, she placed fourth in the 4A competition.

Rudisill, who is also a junior, was in a tie for first place after the first day of competition with a score of 70. On the second day, he shot a 72, while Edwards did the opposite. Both players ended up with a combined two-day score of 142, equaling 2-under par.

Jordan’s Emerson Dever finished the tournament at 143, one stroke under par. She placed third, just one stroke behind the leader. In fourth place was Xinyan Li from Marvin Ridge with a score of 144, even par. Right behind her was Hoggard’s Ellie Hildreth in fifth place with a score of 145, one stroke over par.

Pinecrest secured the team state title by having three golfers ranked in the top 12 and four in the top 17.
