The girls swimming and diving team from Myers Park won their third consecutive N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state championship this past weekend at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

The Mustangs earned a total score of 259.5, outscoring Green Hope by 19.5 points in the team standings.

Myers Park has now achieved its fourth state championship in girls swimming, adding to their previous victories in the last three years and 1976.

Avery Klamfoth and Sofia Plaza, from Myers Park, were the top performers for the Mustangs. Klamfoth placed first and Plaza placed second in the 200-yard IM, with times of 1:57.61 and 1:59.04. They also took second and third place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Furthermore, Myers Park also achieved second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay events.

The 2024 State Swimming Championships for 4A NCHSAA were hosted by Green Hope’s Mere Whelehan at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C. on February 10, 2024. The photos were taken by Dean Strickland from HSOT.com.

Junior Mere Whelehan was a major contributor to Green Hope’s second-place finish at the state championship, earning her the title of Most Outstanding Swimmer.

Whelehan emerged victorious in both the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle events. Additionally, she contributed to the gold medal-winning 200-yard freestyle relay team by swimming the second leg.

Completing the top five in the rankings for the girls’ teams were Marvin Ridge (192.5), Charlotte Catholic (177.5), and Ardrey Kell (145).

The NCHSAA presented Sportsmanship Awards to two athletes: Andi Quisumbing from Green Hope and Kayman Neal from Myers Park.

The team from Myers Park (consisting of Sofia Plaza, Avery Klamfoth, Kayman Neal, and Mary Drummond) completed the race in a time of 1 minute and 43.11 seconds.

Isabel Wolk from East Chapel Hill finished with a time of 1:47.49.

Sloane Whelehan from Green Hope finished with a time of 1:49.11.

Avery Klamfoth from Myers Park achieved a time of 1:57.61.

Sofia Plaza (located in Myers Park) finished the race in 1 minute and 59.04 seconds.

Lily Willis at the Green Level completed the race in 1 minute and 59.98 seconds.

Sloane Whelehan from Green Hope High School achieved a time of 23.23 seconds.

Nikki Nixon from Cardinal Gibbons High School ran a time of 23.28 seconds.

Marvin Ridge’s team, consisting of Madison Winardi, Macie McCarter, Charlotte LePage, and Kaylee McDonald, completed the race in a time of 1 minute and 35.63 seconds.
