Marvin Ridge was the clear victor at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys swimming & diving state championship held at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Saturday.

The Mavericks scored 255 points in the competition, surpassing second-place Cardinal Gibbons by 100 points.

Marvin Ridge has won their fourth boys swimming title in school history at the 4A level in the state championship on Saturday. Previously, they had won three consecutive 3A state championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Marvin Ridge broke two state records on its way to winning the team title, both in relay events.

During the 200-yard freestyle relay, Charles Heisig, Troy Keen, Gavin McCarter, and Michael Rice achieved a time of 1:23.25, setting a new state record. In the 200-yard medley relay, Jordan Willis substituted for McCarter and the team achieved a new record time of 1:30.52, surpassing their previous state record from earlier in the day.

Heisig claimed victory in the 200-yard IM event with a time of 1:47.88, narrowly defeating Ian Stutts from Enloe by a margin of 0.13 seconds.

Marvin Ridge’s Willis placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.67 seconds. Middle Creek’s Grayson Nye set a new 4A state record and won the event with a time of 53.88 seconds.

Cardinal Gibbons came in second place overall with a total of 155 points. The Crusaders were guided by their performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay, where they secured a second-place finish.

Ardrey Kell, Leesville Road, and Enloe placed in the top five teams with scores of 152, 135, and 122 respectively.

At the 2024 4A NCHSAA State Swimming Championships held on February 10, 2024, at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C., Sean Setzer of Ashley High achieved victory in the Men’s 50 Yard Freestyle event and broke the state record. The photographs were taken by Dean Strickland for HSOT.com.

Sean Setzer, a senior at Ashley High School, was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 4A state championship. Setzer achieved two gold medals and broke 4A state records in both the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.75 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 43.99.

The NCHSAA presented Sportsmanship Awards to Zach Richardson from Cardinal Gibbons and Gavin McCarter from Marvin Ridge for their performance in swimming.
