Davidson College’s basketball team, known as the Davidson Heels, will be playing a game in Miami tomorrow. The name “Cable” is well-known in the basketball world of our state, and holds a special significance in Hope Mills. Jeff Caples, a former player at South View High School, had his jersey retired at a ceremony attended by WRAL, the only TV station present. Pat Welter shares the story. Caples expressed his honor at being back at his alma mater and reminisced about his time there, which included winning a state championship and being named Player of the Year in 1993. He went on to play for Duke and currently coaches at the University of Pittsburgh. Caples’ former teammates joined in the celebration and his jersey was officially retired. He spoke fondly of his time at South View and expressed gratitude to those who couldn’t attend, such as his father and high school coach. Caples is a North Carolina native and is set to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. This momentous occasion happened on the same day as the game against Miami.
