Raleigh Charter High School had a dominant performance at the 1A/2A boys swimming championships, while West Davidson’s Nebrich broke a new record.

Raleigh Charter dominated the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A boys swimming & diving state championship at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Friday evening.

The Phoenix team earned a total of 294 points, surpassing second place N.C. Science & Math by over 100 points. N.C. Science & Math finished with a total of 192.5 points.

Raleigh Charter received five gold medals in the event, consisting of two relays and three individual events.

The Raleigh Charter’s 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Kyle Su, Owen Von Weihe, Leon Zhang, and Alex Lee, achieved a gold medal victory by finishing 0.09 seconds ahead of Seaforth’s team. They clocked in at 1:38.66 for their winning time. In addition, this same group of Raleigh Charter swimmers also triumphed over Seaforth in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with a lead of over three seconds.

Raleigh Charter’s individual champions were Zhang in the 200-yard freestyle, and Von Weihe in the 200-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle.

Raleigh Charter has won their second boys swimming state championship, adding to their previous victory in 2017.

On February 9, 2024, Luke Nebrich participated in a swimming competition for West Brunswick.

Luke Nebrich from West Davidson was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Swimmer at the state championship. He broke the record for the 50-yard freestyle in the 1A/2A division with a time of 20.36 seconds.

Nebrich achieved first place in the 100-yard butterfly event, completing it in 50.61 seconds.

Seaforth, Mountain Island Charter, and Franklin Academy placed fifth, fourth, and third, respectively, in the team rankings with scores of 148, 141, and 115.

The NCHSAA also honored two swimmers with the Sportsmanship Award. The recipients for 2024 were Teagan Laursen from N.C. Science & Math and Kyle Su from Raleigh Charter.

The Mountain Island Charter team, consisting of Beck Armstrong, Owen Bright, Jack Lazaroski, and Grant Berry, achieved a time of 1:40.67.
