On Saturday, Wake County had a strong showing at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A girls tennis championships.

Allison Harris from Broughton emerged victorious in the singles championship after a challenging match against Samantha Slowik from Jordan. Harris won with a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. This marks the second consecutive year that Slowik has placed second.

Harris’s victory at the individual championship marks Broughton’s 16th time winning and makes her the 10th singles champion. This puts the Capitals in a tie for the most singles champions from one school. Harris is also the first Capitals player since Maggie Kane in 2012 to win either the singles or doubles title in the 4A division.

In the category of doubles, Apex Friendship has secured the 4A championship for the second consecutive year. In the previous season, Julianne Izod and Riley Jennings were partners, but this year, Julianne Izod played alongside her younger sister Carolyn Izod.

The Izods utilized a tiebreaker in the first set to secure a win against Mia Caruana and Dianna Higgins from Leesville Road with a final score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

On Friday, the initial and secondary matches of the NCHSAA 4A individual championships took place. The following day, the semifinals and finals were held at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh.

In the doubles round, the semifinalists consisted of the regional champions from Leesville Road (4A East), Apex Friendship (4A Mideast), and Myers Park’s Ann Mason Moore and Agnes Shinn (4A West), along with Marvin Ridge’s Jeslyn and Eleri Pratiknjo (4A Midwest).

Harris and Slowik were crowned champions of their respective regions in the singles category. Teagan Reilly, the 4A West champion from Myers Park, also advanced to the semifinals. Sophia Catino, from New Hanover, was the only non-regional champion to make it to the semifinals, defeating Midwest champion Faith Valentine from Lake Norman in the second round.
