The 1990s saw Los Insulares rise to become the top division club, but in 1999 they were relegated to La Liga 2. In the 1993/94 season, Tenerife competed in the UEFA Cup and successfully eliminated teams such as Auxerre and Olympiakos. However, they were ultimately defeated by Juventus in the last 16. Three years later, Tenerife impressively reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. Las Palmas is widely regarded as Tenerife’s top rival.
