On Wednesday, No. 17 North Carolina defeated Hampton 62-32 thanks to Deja Kelly’s 12 points and Maria Gakdeng’s 10 points and nine rebounds.

North Carolina (3-0) held their opponent to under 40 points for the first time since their 93-25 win against South Carolina State on November 16, 2022. The Tar Heels also prevented any player from scoring in double digits against Hampton.

In the second quarter, Kelly initiated an 11-0 streak while Paulina Paris secured four consecutive points, resulting in a 26-6 advantage for the Tar Heels. North Carolina maintained a lead of at least 10 points for the remainder of the game, with a halftime score of 32-13. Hampton struggled to make shots, only hitting 6 of 18 attempts and committing 19 turnovers.

In the third quarter, North Carolina earned a 46-15 lead by scoring 14 consecutive points, with five of those points coming from Kelly. However, their shooting performance in the fourth quarter was not as strong, with only 3 out of 17 shots made.

Both teams had difficulty shooting, with a 33% success rate. However, the Tar Heels performed better at the free-throw line, making 19 out of 26 attempts compared to the Pirates’ 4 out of 9.

Paris tallied 11 points for North Carolina, contributing to the team’s total of 27 points from 29 turnovers committed by Hampton.

Aisha Dabo led the team with seven points for Hampton (0-2).

On Saturday, Elon will be hosted by North Carolina. On Sunday, Norfolk State will play against Hampton.
