South Point wins first boys tennis state championship over Fike

For the first time in school history, South Point has won a boys tennis dual team state championship.

South Point defeated Fike 5-3 on Monday at the Burlington Tennis Center, claiming the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state championship.

The clinching point came in the No. 2 doubles match as Shive Patel, the championship’s most valuable player, and Brandon Cunningham defeated Dylan Skinner and Zachary Hill 8-6.

Patel won the No. 1 singles match for South Point 4-6, 6-4 (10-3) over Fike’s Snyder Pearson, setting the tone for the day. Brandon Cunningham also won his No. 4 singles match, beating Hill 6-3, 6-1.

James Dover of South Point won the No. 2 singles match and Tyler Cunningham won the No. 5 singles match to give South Point a 4-2 lead going into doubles play.

Fike picked up two wins in singles play: Skinner beat Rex Dover 2-6, 6-3 (10-3) in the No. 3 singles and Collins Pearson defeated Asher Dover 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles.

Fike also picked up a win in the No. 1 doubles match Snyder and Collins Pearson defeated James and Rex Dover 8-3.

Before the championship match, the NCHSAA recognized one player from each team with the sportsmanship award. Hatten Gore took the honor for Fike, while Asher Dover was the winner for South Point.
