On Saturday, a significant event occurred at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A girls tennis individual championships, but for different causes.

In the individual competition, McKinley Battle from Rocky Mount became the first state champion for her school after winning against Rennie Liu from Forestview in three sets with a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

The junior made a big leap from exiting in the first round of last year’s tournament. Meanwhile, Liu ended her career as a four-time qualifier, having won at least one match in all four tries and going one round farther in each of the last three seasons.

In the doubles event, Pauline Bui and Loren Galaviz of Terry Sanford defeated the previous champions Caroline and Kathryn Adkins from Fike with a dominant score of 6-1, 6-0.

The triumph of Bui and Galaviz marks the seventh instance of the Bulldogs claiming a doubles championship, putting them on par with the most wins among NCHSAA schools. However, Terry Sanford had not achieved a singles or doubles victory in 27 years, dating back to 1996, until the match on Saturday.

The NCHSAA 3A individual championships consisted of two rounds on Friday, followed by semifinals and finals on Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Both Fike (3A East) and Terry Sanford (3A Mideast) had winning pairs in the doubles category. They were joined in the semifinals by Anslee Falls and Eleina Moon of Lake Norman Charter, who won the 3A West regional championship, and Shea Bieniek and Andi Brinker of Cape Fear, who defeated Lauren and Lydia Holland of Franklin, the 3A West regional champs, in the second round.

Liu, Battle, and Luci Falls from Lake Norman Charter, each representing their respective regions (3A West, Mideast, and Midwest), advanced to the semifinals as regional champions in the singles category. However, the only regional champion who did not make it to the semifinals was Reagan Owens from Hunt, who was eliminated in the first round by Lauren Lucas from South Point. Emma Shriver from Carrboro then defeated Lucas to secure a spot in the semifinals.
