Pine Lake Prep has secured their third consecutive 1A/2A girls swimming championship, with Burns High School’s Tysinger being awarded MVP honors.

On Friday evening, Pine Lake Prep secured their third state championship for swimming and diving in the 1A/2A division at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, according to the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

The Pride team surpassed Raleigh Charter to win the championship. Pine Lake Prep ended with 242 points while Raleigh Charter had 209 points.

Pine Lake Prep’s team triumphed with two gold medals, securing their overall victory. The first medal was earned in the 200-yard medley relay, where Lily Storie, Ella Deardorff, Sydney Haun, and Grace McCarthy completed the race in 1:54.49. Their time was barely faster than Raleigh Charter’s second place finish.

For the 200-yard freestyle relay, Addy McDonough, Campbell Kolbay, Sophie Storie, and McCarthy came in first place with a time of 1:42.39, beating the second place team by over two seconds and earning another gold medal for Pine Lake Prep.

Pine Lake Prep achieved three second-place wins. McCarthy placed second in the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard freestyle, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team also earned a second place finish.

The team from Raleigh Charter, competing in the 400-yard freestyle relay, helped the Phoenix secure second place in the overall team competition. Allyson Deans, Devanshi Garg, Derin Sen, and Kate Ragsdale took home the gold medal with a time of 3:48.21.

On February 9, 2024, Alexandra Tysinger from Burns High School’s girls swimming team.

Alexandra Tysinger, a junior from Burns, was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 1A/2A state championship. She achieved victory in the 50-yard freestyle race with a time of 23.40 and also claimed first place in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 50.83. Impressively, she was just 0.19 seconds shy of breaking the 1A/2A state record.

The top five teams in the standings were Lincoln Charter (130), N.C. Science & Math (125), and Elkin (124).

The NCHSAA acknowledged two individuals for their sportsmanship in swimming on Friday. The recipients of this year’s Sportsmanship Award were Kate Ragsdale from Raleigh Charter and Lily Storie from Pine Lake Prep.

Abigail Emrich, representing Northwood, completed the race in 1 minute and 50.66 seconds.

Daisy Collins from Woods Charter finished with a time of 1:50.77.

Megan Becker from Uwharrie Charter had a time of 1:53.66.
