NC State quarterback MJ Morris will be entering the transfer portal, according to a report from WRALSportsFan.com.

On Wednesday, MJ Morris, the quarterback for NC State, revealed that he will be entering the transfer portal after choosing to sit out the rest of the season in order to maintain his eligibility for another year.

“After much dialogue and contemplation, I have made the sincere choice to submit my name to the transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining,” stated Morris on his social media accounts.

In 2023, Morris took over as quarterback in four games, filling in for the struggling Brennan Armstrong and leading the Wolfpack to wins against Marshall, Clemson, and Miami.

However, he ultimately chose to redshirt, which came as a surprise since NC State was still in the running for a 10-win season. With Armstrong back in the lineup, NC State was able to secure victories in their last three games of the season.

On November 9, NC State coach Dave Doeren stated that as the games continued and time passed, MJ approached him to express his desire to maintain his redshirt status. Doeren was taken aback by this, as MJ was their starting player and he did not anticipate a starter wanting to go back to the bench.

“He mentioned that he was unsure about the direction to take, but he made sure to inform me that it was a topic he had been contemplating and discussing with his family. Following the fourth game, he confidently expressed that preserving his redshirt was significant to him and his family.”

MJ Morris’ father had informed WRAL News earlier that his son had no intentions of transferring.

In 2023, Morris had a total of 648 passing yards, scoring seven touchdowns and only one interception. As a freshman in 2022, he stepped up to play quarterback due to injuries and managed to throw for 719 yards, scoring seven touchdowns but with five interceptions.

Morris expressed gratitude towards the Wolfpack Nation for their love and support.

Morris is expected to have three more years to play. Since Armstrong has used up his eligibility, NC State will probably search the transfer portal for a more seasoned player in that position in 2024.
