Myers Park finishes the 2023 season as the top-ranked girls tennis team in the state.

Myers Park finishes the 2023 season as the top-ranked girls tennis team in the state.

There were four undefeated N.C. High School Athletic Association girls tennis champions, and all four were dominant for most of the year. In any given year, all four — plus undefeated N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 4A champ Charlotte Country Day — would have been good picks for the No. 1 spot in the final HighSchoolOT statewide top 25 rankings.

Reworded: However, Myers Park emerged as the top contender this year and ultimately claimed the top spot in the second annual statewide HighSchoolOT girls tennis final rankings for the 2023 season.

The NCHSAA 4A championship match saw Myers Park triumph over a well-prepared New Hanover in a hard-fought battle. The Mustangs were ranked third in the preseason.

Previous final rankings

Charlotte Country Day came in second place, with New Hanover in third. The 3A state champions, Lake Norman Charter, as well as the 1A champion, Mount Airy, and the 2A champion, Hendersonville, all followed. Green Hope, who was last year’s top team, placed 22nd.

Cape Fear Academy, Gaston Day, and Ridgecroft School were named state champions in their divisions (3A, 2A, and 1A respectively) by the NCISAA. Although they were not ranked statewide, they were highly regarded in their local area codes.

Out of the 25 teams in the preseason top 25, a total of 18 teams were also included in the final top 25 rankings. No. 8 Terry Sanford was the highest ranked team that started the year unranked. Myers Park was ranked third in the preseason.

The complete rankings, including a Top 25 list for the entire state and Top 15 lists for each of the state’s six area codes, can be found below.

Next week, the all-state team will be announced.
