Myers Park alum Drake Maye drafted by the Patriots at No. 3 overall

Myers Park High School quarterback alum Drake Maye did not have to wait long to hear his name called in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The University of North Carolina standout was selected by the New England Patriots with the No. 3 overall pick. He is the highest picked player from North Carolina since Mario Williams was selected at No. 1 overall in 2006.

At Myers Park, Maye was a two-sport star in football and basketball.

As the Mustangs’ quarterback during his sophomore and junior seasons, Maye completed 398 of his 581 passing attempts for 6,713 yards, 86 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He threw for 50 touchdowns as a junior.

Maye did not play for Myers Park as a senior as that season was delayed to the spring as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Maye chose to enroll early and get started with Mack Brown in Chapel Hill.

Besides his efforts on the gridiron, Maye averaged 14.7 points-per-game and 9.7 rebounds per-game in 47 contests as a part of the Mustangs’ varsity basketball team.
