Mary Bonner Dalton breaks the state championship record at the 4A cross country state competition; Gibbons takes home the team title.

Mary Bonner Dalton of Myers Park secured her place in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s record book with her performance at the 4A cross country state championship held at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex on Saturday.

Bonner Dalton set a new record at the Ivey Redmon course and the NCHSAA state championship, with a time of 16:56. This is almost 30 seconds faster than Sarah Vance-Goodman’s record of 17:24.7 from 1996 at T.C. Roberson.

In 2021, Sarah Mitchell from Apex set the previous record at Ivey Redmon with a time of 17:26.96.

Bonner Dalton’s victory marks the first time a Myers Park female cross country runner has won an individual championship in the school’s history.

Bonner Dalton crossed the finish line 50 seconds before Chandler Welsh, a senior at R.J. Reynolds High School who currently holds second place.

Grace Hanson, a senior from Weddington, finished with a time of 17 minutes and 46.85 seconds. Ashlei Summers, a senior from Hoggard, followed closely behind with a time of 17 minutes and 51.23 seconds. Hannah Rae Shaffer, a junior from Cardinal Gibbons, came in fifth with a time of 17 minutes and 55.36 seconds.

Shaffer’s fifth place performance was the best for any Cardinal Gibbons runner, as she led the Crusaders to the team championship. Cardinal Gibbons outpaced Cuthbertson by 45 points. The win by Cardinal Gibbons ends a streak of five consecutive state championships for the Cuthbertson girls program, including the last two 4A titles.

Cardinal Gibbons received support from Addy Mitchell, who finished in sixth place with a time of 18:07.96, Ina Lazarczyk, who came in 16th place with a time of 18:40.25, and Katherine Pagorek, who finished in 17th place with a time of 18:43.47.

Justine Preisano and Charlotte Bell both placed in the top ten for Cuthbertson. Preisano came in seventh with a time of 18:12.66 and Bell finished tenth with a time of 18:17.47.
