Leesville Road’s overtime goal by Camden Wheeler propels them past New Hanover and into the 4th round.

Leesville Road faced a tough challenge from New Hanover in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys soccer state playoffs on Monday night.

In the second overtime period, the Pride, who were the top seed, secured a 1-0 victory with a goal from Camden Wheeler in the 97th minute.

Neither team scored during regulation, but it seemed that Leesville Road may have had a goal during the second half from a free kick. However, the New Hanover goalkeeper prevented the ball from going into the goal, according to the official.

Neither of the teams were able to score during the first period of overtime.

In the second overtime, Jackson Peters passed the ball into the box where it hit the shoulders of Leesville Road’s Costa Heaney and New Hanover’s Tre Bennett, who were both near the goal. The ball bounced up and Wheeler was able to head it past the keeper for the winning goal.

Leesville Road has secured a spot in the fourth round of the state playoffs and will be hosting their conference rival, Cardinal Gibbons (ranked 13th in the state). The Pride emerged victorious in both of their previous matchups against Cardinal Gibbons, with scores of 1-0 and 4-0.

Leesville Road’s overall record is now 17 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties. New Hanover’s season comes to a close with a record of 11 wins, 10 losses, and 3 ties.
