The boys indoor track and field team from T.W. Andrews has won the N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship for the second time in school history.

On Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, the Red Raiders won the 1A/2A indoor track & field state championship with a score of 85 points. They surpassed last year’s state champion, East Burke, who came in second with 66 points.

The most recent year that T.W. Andrews achieved victory in a boys indoor track and field state championship was 1992.

On Saturday, T.W. Andrews emerged victorious in four competitions, one of which was the 300 meter race where Ja’neil Harris won a gold medal and set a new 1A/2A meet record with a time of 34.90 seconds.

Correy McManus was the victor of the 55 meter dash, clocking in at 6.38 seconds, while Jeremiah King claimed first place in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.50 seconds.

The 4x200m relay team from T.W. Andrews achieved first place, while the 4x400m relay team for the Red Raiders came in second.

Kenneth Byrd, a senior at East Burke, was awarded Most Outstanding Performer for the second year in a row. Byrd achieved first place in high jump, second in 55 meter hurdles and pole vault, and third in long jump.

At the recent 1A/2A state meet, a new record was set in the shot put event. Junior Payton-Kimble from Northeastern broke his own record of 55-09, which was set last year. This time, he threw an impressive 60-02.75 on Saturday.

On Saturday, the NCHSAA acknowledged two athletes for their sportsmanship, presenting the Sportsmanship Award to Zaman Thomas from T.W. Andrews and Avery Fraley from East Burke.

“The 1A/2A boys pole vault event is a competition for male athletes in the 1A or 2A classification who will be competing in the pole vault event.”
