“Greene Central secures victory against Manteo in sudden death overtime.”

The boys soccer team from Greene Central exemplified the well-known phrase “survive and advance” in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A playoffs, securing a 2-1 overtime victory against Manteo.

In the 22nd minute, Jose Gonzalez, a senior, scored a goal for Greene Central off a corner kick from Dennis Contreras, giving them a 1-0 lead.

The score remained tied at halftime and was close to being the final score. However, Manteo, who was playing with only nine players due to two yellow cards, scored in the last minute to force the game into overtime.

Neither half of the first overtime resulted in any scoring, and the same was true for the initial five-minute “golden goal” overtime. However, with under two minutes remaining in the second golden goal period, Greene Central secured the winning goal.

The fourth-seeded Manteo (14-6-1) also suffered a defeat in their season opener against the fifth-seeded Greene Central (17-4-1).

The Rams will face off against top-seeded Clinton in the next round as one of the remaining eight teams in the 2A division. The Dark Horses were the state runner-ups in the previous year.
