D’Anna Cotton wins 4 events as Cummings repeats as 2A girls track state champions

Cummings’ girls track & field team successfully defending its N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A state championship on Friday, and it wasn’t particularly close.

The Cavaliers finished the day with 103 points, while second-place N.C. Science & Math finished with 40.

Cummings record six first-place finishes on the day, and D’Anna Cotton accounted for four of them.

In the high jump, Cotton set a new meet record with a height of 5-8, clearing the previous record of 5-7 set by Mikel Franklin of T.W. Andrews in 2016.

Cotton also had a first place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.78 seconds, in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 44.68 seconds, and in the triple jump with a distance of 39-0.5.

Diamond Moore had another first-place finish for Cummings in the long jump with a distance of 18-9.50, and the Cavaliers’ 4×200 relay team won its race with a time of 1:42.24. The relay team was made up of Moore, Taylor Jordan, Brooke Packingham, and Honesti Trollinger.

Catherine Parker led the way for N.C. Science & Math’s second-place finish. She won the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:06.41 and finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:23.51. Parker was also the third leg on the 4×800 relay team which won gold.
