DeWayne Carter, a defensive tackle for Duke University, and Davius Richard, quarterback for North Carolina Central University, have been named two of the 16 contenders for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy. This prestigious award, presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, recognizes the top scholar-athlete in college football who excels in academics, on-field performance, and leadership qualities.

Carter and Richard, being chosen as finalists, will be awarded a postgraduate scholarship of $18,000 for being a part of the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class.

Out of all NCAA divisions and the NAIA, a total of 201 semifinalists were considered, and 16 finalists were chosen. This is the highest number of semifinalists in history.

The top contenders will journey to Las Vegas for the 65th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on December 5th.

At the event, a student from the class will be named the recipient of the 34th Campbell Trophy and will receive an increase in their postgraduate scholarship to $25,000.

Cooper Beebe, an offensive lineman, attended Kansas State University where he received a GPA of 3.84 in Social Studies Education.

• Notre Dame linebacker JD Bertrand has a 3.62 GPA in Marketing.

DeWayne Carter is a defensive tackle who attended Duke University and graduated with a 3.47 GPA in Psychology.

• Loobert Denelus, DE – Benedict [SC] (3.96 GPA – Psychology)

Jacob Dobbs is a linebacker for Holy Cross with a 3.76 GPA in Economics and Religious Studies.

• Olu Fashanu, OT – Penn State (3.45 GPA – Supply Chain & Info Systems)

Zach Frazier, a student at West Virginia University, has a GPA of 3.88 in the field of Sport Management.

• Owen Grover, LB – Wartburg [IA] (3.99 GPA – Biology)

Leo Lowin graduated from Army West Point with a degree in Engineering Management and achieved a 3.92 GPA.

Ladd McConkey, a wide receiver from Georgia, has a high GPA of 3.85 in the field of finance.

Bo Nix, quarterback for Oregon, has a 3.62 GPA in the field of communications.

Davius Richard, quarterback for North Carolina Central, has a GPA of 3.59 in Business Administration.

Luke Schuermann, from DE, attended Johns Hopkins [MD] and earned a 3.61 GPA in Mechanical Engineering.

Taulia Tagovailoa, quarterback for the University of Maryland, has an impressive 3.61 GPA in the field of Family Science.

Liam Thompson is the quarterback for Wabash [IN] with a 3.87 GPA in Rhetoric.

Zak Zinter, an offensive lineman from Michigan, has a GPA of 3.53 in Sport Management.
