Duke University’s men’s basketball team has been selected as the top contender for the 2023-24 ACC season, while sophomore Kyle Filipowski has been chosen as the Preseason ACC Player of the Year. The decision was announced on Thursday by the conference, after a vote from a group of media members.

Filipowski, who was named the ACC Rookie of the Year, was chosen as a first-team Preseason All-ACC member. His classmate Tyrese Proctor was also selected as a second-team member in the preseason.

Duke, after winning a record-breaking 22nd ACC Tournament, secured the top spot in the preseason rankings with 44 out of 51 first-place votes and a total of 757 points. The top four teams in the preseason poll are Duke, Miami, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Filipowski received 35 votes for Preseason Player of the Year and was unanimously chosen for the first-team, earning all 51 potential votes from the media. The second-year player from Westtown, N.Y. is joined on the preseason first team by Armando Bacot (North Carolina), PJ Hall (Clemson), Reece Beekman (Virginia), and Norchad Omier (Miami).

Proctor received 24 votes, placing the second-year student on the preseason second team along with Judah Mintz (Syracuse), Nijel Pack (Miami), Blake Hinson (Pitt), and Quinten Post (Boston College). The Sydney, Australia native also earned a vote for Preseason Player of the Year.

Paolo Banchero, who was selected as the top pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, was the latest player from Duke University to receive the title of Preseason Player of the Year in the league.

The Blue Devils, ranked No. 2 in the AP preseason poll, play their lone exhibition game against UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The regular season tips off on Nov. 6, with Duke matching up at home against Dartmouth at 9 p.m.
