Marten de Roon began his professional career with ASWH, Feyenoord, and Sparta Rotterdam. On 27 March 2010, he made his first appearance in a senior game for Sparta against Twente. However, he only played three times for de Kasteelheren during the 2009/2010 season.
In 2012, Marten de Roon became a member of Heerenveen and then in 2015, he transferred to Atalanta, a team in the Serie A league. During the 2015/2016 season, he played in 36 games for Atalanta.
