Player in focus (Alex Iwobi):
Alex Iwobi is one of the most talented African footballers. The Nigerian football player was born in Lagos on May 3, 1996, but he moved to Arsenal at the age of 8. In 2015 he made his first-team debut for the Gunners, starting in a 3-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.
In October of 2015, Alex Iwobi made his Premier League debut for Arsenal in a 3-0 win against Swansea City. Although he had previously played for England’s youth team, Iwobi eventually switched to playing for Nigeria. He made his first appearance for the senior Nigerian team on October 8, 2015, substituting for Ahmed Musa in a 2-0 defeat against DR Congo.
On October 7, 2017, the Arsenal player scored the game-winning goal for Nigeria in a match against Zambia (1-0), securing the Super Eagles’ spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals. In terms of personal achievements, Alex Iwobi was awarded the title of CAF Young Player of the Year in 2016.
Team in the spotlight (Ivory Coast):
In recent years, Ivory Coast has solidified their position as one of the top teams in Africa. In 2015, the Elephants claimed their second Africa Cup of Nations victory by defeating Ghana in the tournament’s final match. The team emerged victorious through a penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Boubacar Barry scoring the deciding goal.
Several famous football players have been part of the Ivory Coast national team, including Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue, Salomon Kalou, and Gervinho. The team is recognized for their iconic orange uniform but they also wear green shirts and shorts for their away games. Their home stadium is Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny.
Didier Zokora holds the record for the most appearances on the Ivory Coast national team with 123 caps, while the aforementioned striker Didier Drogba is the team’s leading goal scorer with 65 goals. Drogba is considered a symbol of Ivory Coast football and represented the national team from 2002 to 2014, after playing for Chelsea.
