Georgia is one of the many nations that were previously part of the Soviet Union and have been participating as an independent country since 1990. On May 27, 1990, Georgia made their first international appearance, drawing with Lithuania in Tbilisi.

The Georgian national football team has faced difficulties in qualifying for both the FIFA World Cup and the European Championship since their first qualifying game. They have not been able to secure a spot in the final rounds of major tournaments. On March 30, 1997, the team achieved their largest victory when they defeated Armenia at home. However, they suffered their biggest defeat against Denmark (1-6) eight years later.

Kakha Kaladze and Shota Arveladze are regarded as the most well-known players from Georgia. From 1996 to 2011, Kaladze represented his country in 83 games and scored one goal. As a left-footed defender, he achieved two Champions League victories with Italian powerhouse AC Milan in 2003 and 2007.
