WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — When a program’s coach has won more than 1,100 games, there are only so many ways that team will surprise you. Opponents know what Greensboro Day brings to the table every year under coach Freddy Johnson — tough-nosed man-to-man defense, unselfish passing, and lots of off-ball movement.

So it was no surprise that the No. 15 Bengals rolled to a 62-27 victory over New Garden Friends on Wednesday afternoon at The Classic, hosted by Glenn High School.

Greensboro Day (8-1) showed no hangover following a big win over Davidson Day on Monday. The Patriots, last year’s N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A champ, has moved up to 3A this year and will compete against Greensboro Day.

“We’re deep and we’ve got some really good kids,” Johnson said. “We had a good game today and a great game the other night … We’ve got to keep getting better.”

The Bengals were up 19-5 after the first eight minutes and led 42-8 at halftime. In the middle of the third quarter, a running clock was triggered as the Bengals made it a 40-point margin.

The Bengals had balanced scoring, another Greensboro Day hallmark. Aydin Wynn had 10, and Micah Gunter had 11, while Marty Giant, Julian Adigun, and Andrew Juergens had nine each.

New Garden Friends (2-3) was led by Kingston Clifton’s nine points.
