TikTok is letting go of numerous employees as the technology sector continues to lose jobs in the start of the year.
TikTok is reducing its workforce in its advertising and sales division, joining other tech companies in cutting jobs at the start of the new year.
A representative from the company announced on Tuesday that they will be reducing their workforce by 60 employees. The company did not disclose the cause for the job cuts. They did mention that affected employees have the opportunity to apply for other available positions within TikTok, as there are currently over 120 similar job postings.
The company that owns TikTok is called ByteDance and is based in Beijing. In the United States, the social media app has over 150 million users. It is well-known for its short videos that are popular among younger generations. In September, TikTok introduced an e-commerce feature that lets sellers advertise and sell their products on the app.
Other large technology companies have also experienced layoffs this year, such as popular social media platforms Discord and Twitch, which is a subsidiary of Amazon.
Earlier this month, Twitch announced that it would be reducing its workforce by over 500 employees in an effort to reduce costs. Similarly, Discord also made the decision to lay off 17% of its staff, which amounts to 170 employees, in order to increase the agility of its workforce.
Layoffs have affected Amazon’s additional ventures, including Audible for audiobooks and their Prime Video and MGM Studios division. In attempts to reduce expenses, Google also released several hundred employees from their payroll.
According to layoffs.fyi, the technology industry has lost over 10,000 jobs so far this year.
