A lawsuit has been filed by New York City claiming that social media is exacerbating a crisis in youth mental health.
On Wednesday, New York City, along with its schools and public hospital system, filed a lawsuit against major tech companies such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. The lawsuit claims that these social media platforms are “addictive and dangerous” and are contributing to a mental health crisis among children, causing disruptions in learning and draining resources.
According to the lawsuit, minors are particularly vulnerable to harm due to their incomplete brain development.
According to the 311-page complaint filed in California’s Superior Court, young people are becoming increasingly reliant on the platforms of the defendants, who are based in the state.
The largest school district in the country, serving approximately 1 million students, has faced challenges dealing with disruptions both inside and outside of the classroom. They have also implemented counseling for anxiety and depression and created educational materials addressing the impact of social media and online safety. According to official records, the city allocates over $100 million annually towards youth mental health programs and resources, as stated by Mayor Eric Adams’ office.
In the last ten years, it has become evident just how alluring and overpowering the internet can be. Our children are constantly exposed to harmful material, contributing to the mental health crisis among our young population. These were the words of Adams.
This is the newest in a series of legal suits brought forth by states, school districts, and other parties alleging that social media companies are taking advantage of children and teenagers through deliberate design of features that encourage constant scrolling and checking of their accounts.
It has been reported by the city of New York, its Department of Education, and New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. that teenagers are aware of their excessive use of social media, but are unable to control it. This information was revealed in a recent lawsuit, with the city’s public hospital system being the largest in the country.
The legal action aims to have the businesses’ behavior deemed a public problem that must be resolved, along with seeking unspecified financial compensation.
Regarding the filing, the technology corporations stated that they have been actively working on and implementing measures and regulations to prioritize user safety.
According to José Castañeda, a representative for Google’s YouTube, the accusations made in this complaint are false. He stated in an email that the company has worked with professionals in the fields of youth, mental health, and parenting.
A representative from TikTok mentioned that they frequently collaborate with others to learn the most effective methods for dealing with challenges that affect the entire industry.
According to an emailed statement, TikTok implements top-of-the-line measures to promote the well-being of teens. These measures include restricted features based on age, parental controls, a 60-minute time limit for users under 18, and other measures.
According to the Pew Research Center, almost all American adolescents utilize social media, and approximately one out of every six teens consider their usage of YouTube and TikTok to be “nearly nonstop.”
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, stated that their goal is to provide teenagers with safe and appropriate online experiences. They offer more than 30 tools and features to support both teens and their parents. Over the past decade, they have focused on addressing these concerns and have hired experts dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of young people on the internet.
Snap Inc., the company that owns Snapchat, stated that their app is intentionally unique because it immediately opens up to a camera instead of a feed that promotes mindless scrolling. Additionally, it does not have the typical feature of public likes or comments.
The statement stated that although there is always more work to be done, Snapchat is proud of the role it plays in keeping close friends connected, happy, and prepared for the challenges of adolescence.
