Willow Spring softball holds off Cleveland, wins 17th game of the season

A big sixth inning helped Willow Spring’s softball team beat conference foe Cleveland on Thursday evening.

The Storm scored four runs in the bottom in the sixth inning, breaking a 5-5 tie en route to a 9-7 win over the Rams.

Willow Spring had to hold off Cleveland comeback attempt in the seventh inning. The Rams scored two runs, but the Storm held on for the win.

Rachel Humphries helped lead Willow Spring to the win. The Senior recorded three hits on four plate appearances, leading to three RBI and two runs scored. Humphries led the team in RBI and was tied for most runs scored.

Carly Simon and Emily Saw both scored two runs in the game as well. Morgan Derby recorded two RBI.

Kendall Gaunt had a big night at the plate for Cleveland. The junior recorded two hits, resulting in four RBI and one run. Gaunt’s run was a home run — the only home run of the game for either team.

Sophomore Maddie Murphy led the Rams in runs scored with three. She also recorded one hit with two at bats. Izzy Sholar, Avery Morgan, and Sadie Johnston all scored run for Cleveland.

Willow Spring is now 17-3 overall and 11-1 in Greater Neuse River Conference play. The Storm return to play on Apr. 30 with a home game against Corinth Holders.

After the loss, Cleveland is now 12-5 overall and 7-5 in league play. The Rams will also return to action on Apr. 30 with a road game at Garner.
