There was a significant change in this week’s HighSchoolOT Top 25 statewide girls basketball rankings. High Point Christian was defeated by Greensboro Day for the second time this season and dropped out of the top 25.

Willow Spring High School, ranked at No. 24, has taken the place of the Cougars. This marks the seventh consecutive week that Willow Spring has held a spot in the rankings this season. The team, with a record of 20-3, has faced tough competition in their two losses against top five teams Lake Norman and Panther Creek, as well as one loss to an out-of-state school.

The Area Code Top 15 rankings by HighSchoolOT have undergone significant shifts this week, especially in the 252 area code. Following the top six rankings, every spot has changed compared to last week due to a string of unexpected victories. In addition, the 828 area code rankings have some notable changes due to Alexander Central’s surprise win against Watauga.

Below are some details about the process of determining rankings in girls’ basketball:

• Rankings are updated weekly and released on Monday

• The top 25 schools in North Carolina, except for athletic training academies, are qualified for the state-wide ranking.

• This list is updated weekly and includes the top 15 cities in each of the six area codes in the state.

• The N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs cause a temporary halt in rankings.

• The final rankings will be published the week following the state championships.
