West beats East in girls soccer all-star game for first time since 2015

An early goal led the West team to its first win in the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Girls Soccer Game since 2015.

The West defeated the East 1-0 on Tuesday night at Grimsley High School in Greensboro.

It was the East team that had the possession advantage in the first few minutes, but on its first opportunity to attack, the West scored a goal.

Victoria Livaudais of Northern Guilford got control of the ball and found Hough’s Kylee Thompson on the breakaway. Thompson shot the ball low from about 10 yards out to give the West a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

The goal by Thompson, who was named the most valuable player of the game, was the only goal of the game. The West tallied just two shots on goal through 80 minutes, while keepers Reese DeJong of Cox Mill and Elizabeth Navola of Christ the King combined for a clean sheet in goal. DeJong was credited with one save in the first half, while Navola had four saves in the second half.

For the game, the West recorded six shots, two shots on goal, and two corner kicks.

The East had plenty of opportunities, and dominated possession in the second half in particular. The East posted 11 shots, including five shots on goal, and six corner kick opportunities, but the team could not get past the keepers from the West.

Perhaps the best chance of the game for the East came in the second half when Katie Komorner of Apex Friendship took a shot that went off the side of the net. Komorner also had a chance to tie the game off a pass from Selah Jackson of Heritage, but Navola was able to make the save.

With the win, the West now has a lead in the series with a record of 12-11-9 against the East. Entering the game, the East had won two straight all-star games, with the two teams tying in 2021.
