Wesleyan Christian builds postseason momentum in weather-shortened finale

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Inclement weather in the Triad allowed Wesleyan Christian to turn to page to its main goal a few innings ahead of schedule.

A lightning-shortened 5-2 game against Christ School closed out the Trojans’ regular season slate. They entered the day having won four straight, and held its Saturday afternoon lead with one out in the top of the fifth.

Next up is the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 4A state playoffs where, a year ago, Wesleyan came a win short of claiming back-to-back titles. Despite a 13-11 overall record, only two losses have come to NCISAA opponents–– both were by one run.

All of the pieces are in place for the Trojans to make another lengthy pursuit of a championship. Two-way star Josh Hammond showed why in the bottom of the first inning when he blasted a lead-off home run.

Hammond’s long ball was followed by Brandon Loehr’s two-run single that grabbed a 3-1 lead after one.

Nick Papciak drove in his brother Mikey on a run-scoring hit in the second, and Hammond pushed the lead to 5-1 when he earned a bases-loaded walk in the third.

Mikey Papciak went four innings and allowed a pair of runs on four hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Roddy Woodard took over in the fifth but only retired one batter before the game was suspended.

Christ School picked up an RBI single from Jonathan Reece in the first, and doubles from Lou Boatwright and Cade Graning in the fourth to plate its two runs.

The Greenies used five pitchers across four innings. They allowed seven hits, walked five, and struck out six.
