Wells Fargo State Cup race standings for the fall season are currently being led by Marvin Ridge, First Flight, Seaforth, Mount Airy, and Thomas Jefferson.

After fall sports have concluded, there are currently five teams leading the N.C. High School Athletic Association Wells Fargo State Cup standings. In the 1A classification, there is a tie for first place between two teams.

Mount Airy and Thomas Jefferson are currently in a tie for the top spot in the 1A class, both with a total of 157.5 points.

Mount Airy’s football and girls dual-team tennis teams were victorious in the state championships, and their boys soccer team made it to the fourth round of playoffs. Thomas Jefferson also had successful runner-up finishes in girls cross country and girls golf, and their boys soccer team made it to the state semifinals.

Seaforth took the lead in the 2A Wells Fargo State Cup standings with 145 points thanks to their second-place finish in the boys cross country state championship. The Hawks also saw success in other sports, with a fifth place finish in girls cross country and advancing to the regional semifinals in girls dual-team tennis and volleyball.

First Flight leads the 3A race in the State Cup standings after winning the boys soccer state championship in the fall. The Nighthawks also finished second in girls cross country and fourth in boys cross country.

Marvin Ridge has taken a commanding lead in the 4A rankings with a score of 220 points. They are the sole team in the state, regardless of classification, to achieve over 200 points during the fall season.

Marvin Ridge emerged as the victor in the boys’ state cross country competition, secured third place in girls’ golf, and claimed fourth place in girls’ cross country. In addition, the Mavericks excelled in girls’ dual-team tennis, advancing to the regional championship, and made it to the regional semifinals in volleyball.

The Wells Fargo State Cup is given out every year to honor the best high school athletic program in each division. Schools earn points based on their performance in state championship competitions. Points are awarded to schools that finish in the top eight of each playoff, including tied scores.

The top team receives 50 points, the second-place team gets 45 points, and the points decrease by five for each subsequent place until eighth place, which earns 15 points.

In the case of a tie, the schools will be awarded an equivalent number of points, taking into consideration the number of teams involved in the tie and the number of teams ranked higher in the standings.

Each school earns five points for every sanctioned sport in which they qualify for the postseason.
