Weddington boys basketball fends off shorthanded Millbrook

RALEIGH, N.C. — As one of the few returning starters from last year’s team, there’s more on the broad shoulders of Weddington senior K.J. Younger.

But as Saturday at the Dexter Cooley Showcase shows, he’s more than capable.

Younger led the Warriors with 29 points as Weddington defeated Millbrook 64-59 in a matchup between two boys basketball teams that are sitting just outside the HighSchoolOT top 25.

The UNC-Greensboro recruit had 18 at halftime as the Warriors led 36-26.

Weddington (7-2) played its usual style — sharing the ball well and grinding down their opponents with defense. Mason Zepp, with nine points, was the team’s second-leading scorer.

Millbrook (4-4) was without leading scorer Ashton King due to injury, but held their own with 18 points from Joshua Bowen and 12 from Josh Conti. The Wildcats’ other three losses are to statewide top 25 teams (Davidson Day, Berean Baptist, and Farmville Central).
