Veteran ENC coach Brian Paschal returning to Washington
The Washington High School Pam Pack have landed their next head coach. The opening will be filled by Brian Paschal, a veteran head coach in Eastern North Carolina.
Paschal is replacing Matt Taylor, who decided to return to D.H. Conley to be an assistant after making some progress with the Pam Pack.
The news was first reported by the Washington Daily News and was confirmed this morning by Brian North of WCTI.
It is a return to Washington for Paschal, as he led the program from 1996-2002. He has been a head coach of 11-man football for over 25 seasons. He also led the programs at the defunct Chocowinity (1989-91), the defunct Roanoke (2004-09), D.H. Conley (2010-14), Bear Grass Charter (2017-19), and the defunct Riverside (2021-22). HIs last Riverside team finished 11-2.
He retired from teaching in 2023 and will remain retired as a teacher.
Washington is coming off of a 4-7 overall record in 2024. The Pam Pack knocked off multiple favored teams in the Eastern Plains Conference. Washington made the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A East playoffs and fell on the road at Wallace-Rose Hill in the first round.
With an average daily membership of 805 students, Washington is set to be a 4A program after the NCHSAA realigns into eight classifications this year.
In the initial draft of the new conferences, Washington was placed in a 4A league with Eastern Wayne, North Johnston, North Lenoir, North Pitt, SouthWest Edgecombe, and West Craven. The conference plans are subject to change following a period of feedback and adjustments.
