Uwharrie Charter successfully defends their 1A wrestling title, defeating Avery County for the second consecutive year.

Uwharrie Charter and Avery County have faced each other in the past four N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A dual-team wrestling championships, and currently hold a tied record in those matches.

For the second year in a row, Uwharrie Charter has been named the state champion in the 1A division. They secured the title by defeating Avery County 36-33 in a close match that was decided by the final bout.

Avery County started the day strong against Uwharrie Charter, building a 27-6 lead with four pins from Cooper Foster (113), Benjamin Jordan (126), Grant Reece (132), and Kenneth Pritz (138).

Uwharrie Charter experienced a shift after Jack McArthur triumphed over Mason Bentley with a 6-2 score in the 144-pound weight category. This was then followed by Lorenzo Alston’s quick pin just 13 seconds into the 150-pound match.

McArthur and Alston scored nine points, leading Uwharrie Charter to a 24-point streak. This included two additional pins in the 165-pound and 175-pound weight categories by Alek Millikan and Caden Bond. With only two matches remaining, Uwharrie Charter held a 30-27 advantage.

However, the match was not yet finished. Cael Dunn, representing Avery County, earned six points for the team after Michael Shropshire was injured in the 190-pound weight class. This gave Avery County a lead of 33-30 as they headed into the final bout.

Jaden Maness was the standout performer for Uwharrie Charter. In the 215-pound division, the last match of the day, Maness defeated Avery County’s Connor Brewer by pinning him at the 2:41 mark, securing a 36-33 victory for the Eagles.

This past Saturday marked Uwharrie Charter’s fifth time competing in the dual-team wrestling state championship. The team currently holds a record of 3 wins and 2 losses in state championships and has achieved back-to-back victories.

Avery County has competed in five dual-team state championships, winning two of them.

Grayson Hoilman from Avery County defeated Devonte Harrison from Uwharrie Charter Academy with a final score of 9-4, giving Avery County a 3-0 lead.

In the 106-pound weight class, Ethan Hines from Uwharrie Charter Academy defeated Alexandero Ical Tuil from Avery County by a score of 9-2, with the match being tied 3-3 at one point.

In the 113-pound weight class, Cooper Foster from Avery County defeated Caleb Saldana from Uwharrie Charter Academy by a fall in 45 seconds, giving Avery a 9-3 lead.

Brennan Worrell (Uwharrie Charter Academy) defeated King Orvosh (Avery County) with a score of 4-0 at the Avery County match. This win brought Avery’s overall record to 9-6.

Benjamin Jordan from Avery County defeated Rick Riccardella from Uwharrie Charter Academy by fall in 1 minute and 21 seconds, with Avery winning the match 15-6.

In the 132-pound weight class, Grant Reece from Avery County defeated Brandon Jordan from Uwharrie Charter Academy with a pin in 54 seconds. This win brought the score to 21-6 in favor of Avery.

In the 138-pound weight class, Kenneth Pritz from Avery County defeated Jair Ulloa from Uwharrie Charter Academy by a fall at 5 minutes and 44 seconds. This win contributed to Avery County’s overall victory of 27-6.

In the match between Jack McArthur from Uwharrie Charter Academy and Mason Bentley from Avery County, McArthur won by a score of 6-2. This resulted in a team win for Avery County with a final score of 27-9.

Lorenzo Alston from Uwharrie Charter Academy defeated Grayson Brown from Avery County by a fall in just 0:13, resulting in Avery County winning 27-15.

In the 157-pound weight class, Carson Robinson of Uwharrie Charter Academy defeated Johnathon Gragg of Avery County with a score of 4-2. This contributed to Avery County’s overall victory with a final score of 27-18.
