Union Pines notches third straight shutout, beats Western Harnett
For the third time in as many games, Union Pines won a football game on Friday night without giving up a point.
The Vikings have outscored their opponents 122-0 in the first three games of the season, including a 45-0 win over Western Harnett on Friday night.
Union Pines scored three times in the first quarter — all of them passes from Anthony Goswick. The first was a 15-yard pass to Hayne Tobias, the second a 39-yard pass to John Erguiza, and the third a 27-yard pass to Sincere McGargo.
Union Pines led 21-0 after one quarter and 24-0 at halftime after a Kael Jahn 35-yard field goal.
It didn’t take long for Union Pines to pull away in the third quarter. Goswick scored a 38-yard rushing touchdown to push the lead to 31-0, then Ryan Greene completed a 26-yard pass to Erguiza for another touchdown to make it 38-0.
The final touchdown of the game came late in the third quarter when Tyler Thomas broke a 12-yard run for a score.
Goswick finished the night 8-of-13 passing for 140 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown, which led the team.
Erguiza led the team in the receiving yards with 89 on three reception. He caught two touchdown passes.
Union Pines (3-0) hits the road next Friday for a tough game against Radleman (3-0). Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
Western Harnett (0-3) has a bye next week but returns to action on Sept. 20 at home against Harnett Central as All-American 3A/4A Conference pay begins.
