Greensboro, N.C. — GREENSBORO, N.C. – Facing its first road environment of the season, No. 14 North Carolina withstood a packed Corbett Sports Center to come away with a 66-47 win over N.C. A&T from Greensboro on Tuesday night. Redshirt-freshman Laila Hull proved that she has arrived with a career-high 14-point performance and five rebounds.
With Hull leading the charge due to a hot second half, North Carolina (3-0) staved off N.C. A&T (0-3) and held an opponent under 50 points for the 32nd time in the Courtney Banghart era.
Joining Hull in double-figures, Donarksi added 10 points and nailed a triple for the 10th game in-a-row. On the defensive end, Reniya Kelly led the Tar Heels with a career-best five steals as UNC went on to record a season-high 15.
Alyssa Ustby continued to be a power for the Tar Heels off the glass, collecting a team-high nine rebound and adding seven points. Grace Townsend continues to dish out assists at a high-rate, with six helpers for the 60th game of her career with five or more.
Jumping out to a 7-0 run highlighted by the hands of Kelly remaining hot, Carolina snagged early command over the Lady Aggies. The environment of N.C. A&T empowered a scoring burst from the Lady Aggies to remain close with the Tar Heels through one, with UNC ahead 13-10.
The Tar Heel hands began to heat up on the second, shooting at a 56.3% clip as a team. Powered by Ustby and Grant, an 8-0 run began to create separation from N.C. A&T. On the defensive end, Kelly remained hungry already setting a new career-high with four steals in the first half alone. Holding the Lady Aggies scoreless for over the final four minutes of the frame, Carolina carried a 35-21 lead into the break.
Breaking out in in the second half, Hull scored 11 of her overall points alone in the final two quarters as UNC led by as many as 21 to go on and defeat the Lady Aggies, 66-47.
North Carolina returns to Greensboro on Friday to host No. 2 UConn in an early season test from First Horizon Coliseum. Tip against the Huskies airs nationally on ESPN2 at 6 p.m.
