Tyshaun Goldston’s three scores lift Randleman over Bunker Hill in 2A showdown

RANDLEMAN, N.C. — Randleman may have put the 2A West on notice.

To make noise in the playoffs, you have to win games like their 35-21 victory against visiting Bunker Hill on Friday.

The Tigers (3-0) mounted a huge lead, scoring three touchdowns on three long passes from John Kirkpatrick to standout wide receiver Tyshaun Goldston (42, 32, and 20 yards respectively).

Goldston ended the game with 9 receptions for 174 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kirkpatrick was 19-of-30 passing for 275 yards with three scores and two picks, plus a rushing score.

“We knew we were the underdogs coming into this,” Goldston said. “We knew if we won, it’d put us over this year.”

Bunker Hill (2-1), which made it to the regional final of last year’s 2A playoffs, made that lead disappear with three touchdowns by Jaylan Willis — in three different ways.

Willis scored on a 95-yard kickoff return for score with just 4.7 seconds left until halftime to break up Goldston’s barrage of scoring and make it 21-7 at halftime.

He then scored on an 87-yard run and a 22-yard interception return in the third quarter, and the game was tied 21-all.

Randleman’s defense bowed up in the fourth quarter and stopped all of Bunker Hill’s drives. A 2-yard scramble by Kirkpatrick, who dove for the pylon, made it 28-21 with 10:16 to go.

The icing on the cake came about three minutes later, when a Bunker Hill snap on a punt went well over the punter’s head and was scooped up and scored by Randleman lineman Brandon Boone from 22 yards out.

Bunker Hill ended the game with four turnovers — one interception and three fumbles if counting the bad snap — and 14 penalties for more than 100 yards.

Randleman, ranked 10th in the 336 area code, will host Union Pines next week.

Bunker Hill, ranked 11th in the 828 area code, will have a bye week before preparing for conference play.
