Merge participants from North Carolina

Here are the former high school football players from North Carolina at the event, in order of where they rank in NFL Mock Draft Database’s Consensus Big Board.

Our upcoming pre-draft coverage will include the official heights and weights of all players participating in the combine.

According to others, Drake Maye is the second highest ranked player in this year’s group. The previous quarterback for the University of North Carolina is widely believed to have the potential to be a leader for a team. Maye had a successful second year as the team’s starting quarterback. During this time, the alum from Myers Park High School completed 269 out of 426 pass attempts (which is equal to 63.1%). He also threw for a total of 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Additionally, he ran for 449 yards and scored 9 touchdowns on 112 attempts. He received Second Team All-ACC honors. During his time at Myers Park, Maye threw for 6,713 yards and 86 touchdowns in just two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Mustangs. He was also a part of the varsity basketball team, scoring a total of 693 points in two years.

NC State’s massive linebacker, Payton Wilson, quickly became a beloved figure among Wolfpack supporters. Despite originally committing to UNC, he ultimately chose NCSU. Despite early struggles with injuries, he became the team’s top defensive player. Wilson is currently ranked as the 54th best prospect in the draft class. After a successful career at Orange High School, he was honored as a First Team All-ACC selection. Wilson’s impressive stats include 138 total tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, 3 interceptions, 9 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries. He was also ranked as the 5th best linebacker in the country by PPF with a grade of 88.9.

During his brief tenure with UNC, Devontez Walker impressed NFL teams with his performance as a wide receiver. In just seven games, he successfully caught 35 passes for a total of 656 yards and scored seven touchdowns, thanks to the NCAA granting him eligibility. As a graduate from West Charlotte High School, Walker is ranked as the 56th overall prospect and is highly regarded for his ability to make vertical plays among this year’s class of players. Before attending UNC, Walker accumulated 63 receptions, 1,045 yards, and 12 touchdowns in a two-year period at Kent State.

Cedric Gray, a highly-touted linebacker prospect in this year’s draft, hails from North Carolina. With an overall pick of 88, Gray, formerly of Ardrey Kell High School, is expected to be selected on day two. He had an impressive career at UNC, earning recognition as a First Team All-ACC player in 2023 for his 121 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, one interception, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Gray also caught the attention of scouts at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. A successful showing at the combine could potentially boost his draft stock even higher.

A previous athlete who excelled in both football and another sport and won a state championship could potentially be selected as one of the first running backs in this year’s draft. Will Shipley, who attended Weddington High School, has officially announced his entry into the draft after accumulating 3,350 yards and 33 touchdowns over three seasons at Clemson University. On the NFL Mock Draft Database Big Board, Shipley is currently ranked at No. 112. His physique is reminiscent of former Dolphins and Texans player Lamar Miller, who measured in at 5-foot-11 and 212 pounds and ran a 4.4 second 40-yard dash at the 2012 combine. Shipley, who is reported to be 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds, is expected to have a decently fast speed.

A former student of Southern Durham High School has the potential to be drafted as one of the first running backs in 2024. Jaylen Wright, a highly skilled player from the University of Tennessee, has a ranking of #129 on the consensus big board. He was the top-rated rusher by Pro Football Focus in the SEC conference with a grade of 91.0 and holds the record for the fastest time to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a single season at his school. He was able to reach a maximum speed of 22 miles per hour during his breakaway runs.

Delmar Glaze, a former offensive tackle from West Mecklenburg High School, was selected at No. 151 overall. Despite not being highly regarded, he eventually became a standout player at Maryland University and was recognized as one of the best tackles in the Big-12 conference. Bleacher Report has also recognized his talents, ranking him as the No. 103 prospect.

Malik Mustapha, a previous student of Weddington High School, could potentially make an impression this week due to his exceptional athleticism as a safety. In 2023, he was honored as Second Team All-ACC for his safety skills while representing Wake Forest University as a team captain. Throughout the season, he tallied 67 tackles, five of which were for a loss, half a sack, one interception, three pass breakups, and one forced fumble. He is currently ranked as the 171st best prospect. During his time on Weddington’s varsity team, which spanned two years, Mustapha accumulated a total of 132 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, one sack, and eight interceptions.

Both Shipley and Mustapha played roles in Weddington’s 2019 3AA championship win.

Josh Karty, a graduate from Western Alamance High School, is considered the top kicker prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft. While it is not common for kickers to be drafted, Karty has a strong chance of being chosen as the 187th overall prospect. During his time at Stanford University, Karty received two First Team All PAC-12 honors. In the previous season, he successfully made 23 out of 27 field goals, with his longest being 56 yards. In his high school career at Western Alamance, Karty made 32 field goals and 137 extra points.

An NFL Draft hopeful, and former student of Dudley High School, has caught the attention of multiple teams. Myles Murphy, a former defensive tackle for UNC, has received an invite to the combine, despite not having outstanding stats during his time with the Tar Heels. However, at 6-foot-4 and 312 pounds, he possesses the physical attributes that NFL coaches are looking for. Murphy was a 4-star recruit and started in all 13 games for UNC last season. He was recognized as Honorable Mention All-ACC and recorded 24 total tackles, one sack, 4.5 tackles for a loss, and a fumble recovery. According to NFL Mock Draft Database’s Consensus Big Board, Murphy is ranked as the 222nd overall prospect.

Although Sam Hartman is not a North Carolina high school graduate, he hails from the state. He joined Davidson Day’s varsity football team in 2015 and 2016 as their starting quarterback. During this time, he amassed 6,388 passing yards and 69 touchdowns. Later, he attended Oceanside Collegiate Academy in South Carolina for his remaining high school years before enrolling at Wake Forest University. Hartman played as a starting quarterback at Wake Forest for five consecutive seasons before transferring to the University of Notre Dame in the previous year. Throughout his six years in college, he threw for a total of 15,656 yards. He is currently ranked as the No. 223 prospect overall.

As one of the 321 participants chosen for this year’s NFL Combine, Jacob Monk, a former Corinth Holders High School student, may be underrated as the No. 365 prospect on the combined big board. During his years at Duke University, Monk served as a two-year captain and was honored with First Team All-ACC recognition for his skills as a guard in 2023.
