Trinity Christian 3-star WR Fonzy Smith commits to Charlotte
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s football program got good news on Tuesday. Fonzy Smith, a rising senior wide receiver at Fayetteville’s Trinity Christian School, verbally committed to the 49ers. He announced his choice to his X account shortly after noon.
Smith is considered a 3-star prospect by Rivals and 247Sports. He is not ranked by On3 or ESPN. Rivals is high on Smith, ranking him as the No. 8 class of 2025 prospect in North Carolina. 247Sports has him lower at No. 26 in N.C.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect also received offers from UNC, Liberty, Cincinnati, Bethune-Cookman, Campbell, and NC Central over his recruitment. UNC became the first school to offer Smith on Feb 15 of last year.
As a junior in 2023, Smith recorded 24 receptions for 544 yards and nine touchdowns over nine games. He also had 64 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions from his safety position on defense. Trinity Christian finished with a 10-2 overall record and as the runner-up in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division II state championship game. Smith was named to the NCISAA’s Division II All-State Team.
Smith joins Butler defensive lineman Jadyn Farmer as Charlotte’s only in-state commitments so far in the class of 2025.
