The top 25 rankings for football in the state are headed by Weddington and Providence Day.

Weddington has emerged as the top-ranked high school football team in North Carolina’s 4A classification after a strong performance in the playoffs. They have claimed the No. 1 spot in the HSOT Top 25.

Weddington’s dominant performance in the playoffs came to a close with a decisive 56-21 win against 4A East champion Hoggard in the championship game. Although the Warriors suffered two narrow losses in the regular season, data reveals that Weddington faced the most challenging schedule compared to any other team in the state.

For the second year in a row, Providence Day placed second. They were victorious in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division I state championship once again. Although they had previously lost to Rabun Gap from Georgia, they were able to defeat them and claim the title. Our staff determined that Weddington had faced tougher opponents overall.

Each state champion of the N.C. High School Athletic Association placed within the top seven rankings. Hickory, the 3A champion, holds the No. 3 spot in the state, while Reidsville, the 2A champion, is ranked No. 4. Mount Airy, the 1A victor, sits at No. 7. The Mount Airy Granite Bears have achieved a 30-game winning streak.

The 2023 football season’s Area Code Top 15 rankings, as determined by HighSchoolOT, have been officially announced. Northeastern took the top spot in the 252 area code, followed by Reidsville in the 336, Weddington in the 704, Hickory in the 828, Seventy-First in the 910, and Cardinal Gibbons in the 919.
