For each week of the 2024 high school football season, HighSchoolOT will release the Starting 22. It lists the best performances from every position across North Carolina. Last week was week one for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association teams and week zero for the N.C. High School Athletic Association teams.

Coaches should send in performance nominations to [email protected] for consideration each week. Players cannot have a repeat selection later in the year, as the goal of this is to shine the light on as many players as possible.

Offense

QB — Brody Norman, junior, Mooresville

• In Mooresville’s stunning 66-point effort against Davie County, Norman accounted for five first half touchdowns. He completed 15/20 passing attempts for 230 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also rushed for 84 yards and two scores on just eight attempts.

RB — Mitchell Summers, senior, Grimsley

• Arguably the best offensive player in the state, Summers, who to many opposing coaches’ relief is now a senior, rushed for 212 yards and five touchdowns in Grimsley’s blowout win over a good Mount Tabor team.

RB — Shannon Wingate Jr, junior, North Lincoln

• North Lincoln’s bell cow back rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries against a very good West Lincoln team.

WR — Kingston Purefoy-Farrington, senior, Orange

• The senior had five catches for 227 yards and two touchdowns in Orange’s loss to a tough Southeast Alamance team.

WR — Sean Brady, senior, Hough

• The senior had six receptions for 212 yards and three touchdowns in Hough’s close 45-44 loss to a talented Northwestern team.

FLEX — Jaylen Moore, junior RB, High Point Christian

• Fresh off his arrival to High Point Christian, Moore rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries in HPCA’s 48-6 win over SouthLake Christian.

OL — Luke Whitt, senior, West Stokes

• 75% film grade (coach is an admitted tough grader), four knockdowns, eight Extra Effort plays (going above and beyond what’s called for), and one Home-run Block (springs a TD).

OL — Jackson Sammons, junior, West Stokes

• 75% film grade (coach is an admitted tough grader), five knockdowns, seven Extra Effort plays (going above and beyond what’s called for), and one Home-run block (springs a TD).

OL — Chase Holland, senior, Midway

• The senior center was credited with eight pancake blocks as Midway had 320 yards of total offense.

OL — Montgomery Edwards, senior, Marvin Ridge

• Despite in a losing effort, the Crest transfer had a really good game for Marvin Ridge as he accounted for 10 total pancake blocks.

OL — Jacob Asher, senior, Southern Alamance

• Asher, a center, had the highest grade of all of the Southern Alamance offensive linemen. He paved the way up front to lead the team to 405 rushing yards, along with eight rushing touchdowns. The Patriots backs averaged 12.7 yards per carry against Graham.

Defense

DL — Aaron Dickey, senior, Polk County

• The edge rusher currently leads the state in sacks after his four-sack opening week performance. He had 11 total tackles in the Wolverines’ 30-0 shutout win over Madison.

DL — Darrell Herriott, senior, Cleveland

• The senior nose guard had six tackles on his own and caused problems for Hoggard that benefited other players thanks to his relentless effort.

DL — Quamell Scott, junior, Ashbrook

• As a DEFENSIVE TACKLE, Scott recorded two interceptions in Ashbrook’s 29-13 win over Forest Hills.

DL — Zaire Blount, junior, North Pitt

• The junior edge rusher had 12 total tackles and three sacks in North Pitt’s thrilling victory over Martin County High School.

LB — Antoine Doyle Jr., senior, Vance County

• Doyle had a great start to his senior year as he racked up 14 total tackles, three tackles for a loss, and two sacks in Vance County’s shutout victory over Warren County.

LB — Terande Spencer, senior, Richmond

• Spencer was everywhere for Richmond, making bone crushing hit after bone crushing hit. He was credited with 20 total tackles, 12 of which were solo stops in the tight loss to a talented Seventy-First team. He had four tackles for a loss and one sack.

LB — Luke Faulkner, junior, Southern Nash

• Played over 100 total snaps, was credited with 15 total tackles, three tackles for a loss, and two quarterback hurries on defense. On offense, he rushed for 64 yards on seven carries, scored on a two-point conversion, and had a 24-yard reception.

DB — ZyKing Patillo, junior, Havelock

• In Havelock’s impressive 51-14 win over Wallace-Rose Hill, Patillo registered six total tackles and three interceptions against a Bulldogs team that doesn’t even throw the ball that often. The safety also made a touchdown-saving tackle.

DB — Harley Moyer, senior, Union Pines

• Moyer was credited with three tackles, a tackle for a loss, and two interceptions in Union Pines’ season-opening 42-0 shutout win over a Triton team that made the playoffs last year.

DB — Cairo Skanes, senior, Providence Day

• Providence Day’s defense was very good in the 13-7 loss to Weddington, and a big part of that was Skanes’ performance from the secondary. He had 20 total tackles, two tackles for a loss, a pass breakup, and had generally strong coverage all night.

FLEX — Braydon Hervey, senior LB, Franklin

• Hervey was a big part of Franklin’s impressive 33-13 win over 1A power Murphy. The linebacker had seven tackles and 73 return yards. He also had 126 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries on offense.
