The South Mecklenburg boys’ basketball team, ranked 18th, recovered from their previous loss to defeat Charlotte Catholic.

South Mecklenburg’s boys basketball team had a minor flaw in their record this season, but they quickly moved on from it with a strong first half showing in the Battle of Park Road against Charlotte Catholic.

In the first 12 minutes of the game, seven Sabres made three-point shots, leading the team to a 63-52 victory and overcoming their defeat against Berry the previous night.

South Meck made a strong initial statement by taking a commanding 17-4 lead in the first quarter.

Drew Dinkins contributed to Catholic’s comeback effort, but the opposing team continued to make three-point shots.

Jim Gatehouse made back-to-back three-point shots, contributing to the Sabres’ 41-20 lead as they headed into the locker room.

Charlotte Catholic gradually closed the gap by scoring more than double the points of the Sabres in the second half, but the initial disadvantage proved insurmountable.

Peter Moye was the top scorer for South Mecklenburg, scoring 22 points. Anderson Skelton also had a strong performance with 15 points. The only other Sabre player to reach double digits was Gatehouse, who added 10 points to the team’s total.

This victory marked Moye’s 11th game of the season where he scored over 20 points.

On Friday night, South Mecklenburg will journey to Palisades in hopes of gaining back lost ground in the SoMeck conference rankings. The team currently holds a record of 17-3, with a 5-2 record in league games.

Charlotte Catholic’s record drops to 13-7 after their loss. This Friday, the Cougars will face Rocky River with a conference record of 5-3.
