The next head football coach at Wheatmore will be Jacob Sheffield, who is returning to the school.

Jacob Sheffield, once the head football coach at High Point Central, will now be in charge of the football team at Wheatmore High School.

The announcement of Sheffield’s hiring was made by the school on Friday, as first reported by SportsTone.Net.

Philip Yarbrough, who retired in January, is being replaced by Sheffield. Yarbrough left to work in his local community at Central Davidson Middle School as he completes his administrative license. He had assumed the role from Bear Bradley in 2017.

Sheffield previously held a position at Trinity High School as the associate head coach, responsible for coordinating the run game and special teams under Bear Bradley. Prior to that, Sheffield served as both head football coach and assistant athletic director at HPC for a period of three years.

Sheffield hails from Randolph County and completed high school at Trinity in 2005. In 2010, he received his bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University.

Wheatmore’s hiring marks a significant moment for Sheffield, as he began his coaching career with the Warriors back in 2009. During his time there, he served as an assistant coach for football and wrestling, and also as the head coach for track until 2012.

In 2012, he proposed to his partner during a Trinity vs. Wheatmore game.

Furthermore, from 2017 to 2019, Sheffield held multiple positions at Page High School, including head coach for the JV football team, special teams coordinator, and head coach for the wrestling team.

After High Point Central’s 0-11 season, Sheffield became the head coach. Under his leadership, they achieved a 2-5 record in the 2020-2021 spring season during the pandemic, followed by a 4-6 record in the fall of 2021. However, in his final year at HPC in 2022, the team struggled and only achieved a 1-9 record.

In 2023, Wheatmore had a record of 2 wins and 8 losses. They were unable to secure any victories in the Piedmont Athletic 1A/2A league. Wheatmore is classified as a 2A educational institution.

Sheffield’s commencement will take place on May 1st.
