The McCaffrey family’s ties to both Duke and North Carolina are discussed on WRALSportsFan.com.
The 2021 Super Bowl features a highly anticipated showdown between the reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, who have won three times, and the five-time winners, the San Francisco 49ers.
However, were you aware that fans of the NFL in North Carolina have a unique bond not only with a player, but also with the rich athletic history of the McCaffery family?
It is widely recognized that Ed McCaffrey, the father of McCaffrey, was also a player in the NFL. He was a part of the teams in Denver, New York and San Francisco.
Ed’s sibling, Billy, had a passion for basketball. In 1991, he was a member of Duke’s team and even contributed 16 points in their victory against Kansas in the NCAA men’s basketball championship.
Afterwards, he switched to Vanderbilt University, where he was honored with induction into their athletics hall of fame.
The most skilled athlete in Christian McCaffrey’s household may not actually be a member of the McCaffrey family.
Christian McCaffrey’s grandfather on his mother’s since, Dave Sime, was a track star at Duke. He won the silver medal in the 100-meter dash in the 1960 Olympic Games. At the time, many considered him the fastest man in the world.
Not only that, but there’s more.
Sime was a wide receiver for the Duke football team. He batted 376 for Duke’s baseball team. And after all that he became an ophthalmologist.
In 2016, Sime passed away. However, his legacy continues through his induction into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and his grandson’s journey to his first Super Bowl.
