There is an abundance of highly qualified head coaches for NFL teams to choose from during this hiring period.

Bill Belichick was victorious in six Super Bowls while coaching in New England. Pete Carroll also has a Super Bowl win under his belt from his time with Seattle. Recently, Jim Harbaugh achieved a national championship while leading Michigan. Additionally, Mike Vrabel received the AP Coach of the Year award just two years ago.

However, owners must take into account more than just impressive qualifications. Oftentimes, the determining factor is power.

The level of authority that owners are willing to grant coaches can shape the course a franchise follows in its pursuit.

After securing his third Super Bowl victory, Belichick assumed complete authority over personnel choices for the Patriots. However, following Tom Brady’s departure from New England, his success in games decreased due to fewer successful decisions.

Carroll previously held the position of vice president for football operations in Seattle, giving him the ultimate authority in personnel choices over general manager John Schneider. However, now the team belongs to Schneider as Carroll has only been able to secure one playoff victory in his past seven seasons.

During his time with the San Francisco 49ers, Harbaugh relinquished control of personnel decisions to GM Trent Baalke. Despite leading the team to three consecutive NFC championship games and a Super Bowl appearance in his first three seasons, Harbaugh’s record of 44-19-1 over four years was overshadowed by a power struggle with Baalke in 2014.

Harbaugh is not insisting on having control over personnel choices, even though he had a negative experience in San Francisco where he referred to being “micromanaged” by Baalke and CEO Jed York.

Harbaugh, who is 60 years old, appears to be on his way to joining the Los Angeles Chargers, a team currently in search of a new general manager. Several candidates with ties to Harbaugh have been interviewed, and he has also had discussions with the Atlanta Falcons.

It is crucial for the Chargers to hire a general manager who can establish a solid working relationship with Harbaugh. With Justin Herbert as their franchise quarterback, the team has the potential to become a top contender for the championship under Harbaugh’s leadership.

Belichick mentioned being open to giving up some of his responsibilities in regards to personnel in order to remain with the Patriots, but Kraft did not believe that would be feasible.

Kraft emphasized the importance of having checks and balances in our lives, stating that we all need people to serve as “doctor ‘no’s'” to protect us from our own actions. He believes that as individuals gain more power, there is a fear of speaking up and maintaining accountability. He suggests that this applies to all companies and although checks and balances are necessary, it can be challenging to remove them once they are in place.

Belichick has already had an interview with Atlanta and he is scheduled for a second meeting with owner Arthur Blank and other team executives.

The Falcons have not qualified for the playoffs since 2017. They have experienced six consecutive seasons with more losses than wins. In the past three drafts, General Manager Terry Fontenot has not acquired a top-notch quarterback or edge rusher, but players such as tight end Kyle Pitts, wide receiver Drake London, and running back Bijan Robinson possess great talent and would thrive with a true number one quarterback on their team.

It is logical for 81-year-old Blank to entrust 71-year-old Belichick with the organization. The Falcons possess the No. 8 pick in the draft, a considerable amount of salary cap room, and compete in a less challenging division. This must be appealing to Belichick, who is only 15 wins away from surpassing Don Shula for the top spot on the all-time wins list.

The Seahawks, Chargers, Commanders, Titans, Raiders, and Panthers all have vacancies, but Belichick does not appear to be a suitable candidate for any of them due to issues of control or personal preference.

There is a possibility that the Philadelphia Eagles may search for a new coach if they decide to dismiss Nick Sirianni following his meeting with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Friday. However, it is doubtful they will let go of a coach with a 34-17 record and three playoff appearances in three years.

Lurie has a preference for youthful and lesser-known assistants, as evidenced by his hiring of Ray Rhodes, Andy Reid, Doug Pederson, and Sirianni. However, the exception to this pattern was the brief tenure of Chip Kelly. Lurie and GM Howie Roseman do not grant coaches control over personnel decisions, which may restrict their choices.

Following the Green Bay’s playoff victory over Dallas, there was speculation that Jerry Jones would reach out to Belichick. However, the Cowboys have decided to retain Mike McCarthy. It is possible that Belichick was contacted by Jones but declined due to his lack of interest in working for an owner who also serves as the GM.

One possibility for Carroll in 2024 could be to continue as an advisor for the Seahawks and consider returning to coaching the following year, if he decides to do so.

“I have sufficient energy, determination, and a positive mindset, but I am struggling to envision the perfect opportunity,” stated 72-year-old Carroll during his radio broadcast. “I am open to all possibilities, however, I am not overly optimistic about finding it. There are endless possibilities in this world and I am eager to tackle them head on.”

Vrabel lost his job in Tennessee because of a power struggle with first-year GM Ran Carthon. Owner Amy Adams Strunk doesn’t believe in giving a coach full control, saying “teams best positioned for sustained success will be those who empower an aligned and collaborative team across all football functions.”

Creating a winning team begins by determining who holds the authority.
