The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday that goaltender Frederick Andersen will be resuming on-ice activities after experiencing blood-clot problems in early November of last year.

On Wednesday, Hurricanes president/general manager Don Waddell announced that Frederik Andersen was diagnosed with a deep-vein thrombosis and subsequent pulmonary embolisms in November.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolisms (PE) are characterized as a blood clot forming in the deep veins, typically in the lower limbs. A pulmonary embolism happens when a piece of the DVT clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, posing a serious risk to one’s life.

Since then, he has been taking medication to prevent blood clots and consulting with a group of specialists to determine the best way for him to safely return to playing. Frederik has started participating in activities off the ice without any issues and will now start gradually conditioning on the ice.

Andersen last played in net on November 2, 2023 against the New York Rangers. In six games played this season, Andersen is 4-1 with a .894 save percentage. Since then, the Hurricanes have started started three different goalies:

  • Antti Raanta has a record of 12 wins, 7 losses, and 2 ties with a save percentage of .870.

  • Pyotr Kochetkov has a record of 11 wins, 7 losses, and 3 ties with a save percentage of .900.

  • The record for Spencer Martin is 1 win and 0 losses with a save percentage of .929.

“I am ecstatic that I am one step closer to reuniting with my teammates and participating in ice hockey competitions. I am thankful for the assistance and encouragement provided by my family and doctors, as well as the entire Hurricanes team,” Andersen expressed in the announcement.

The Hurricanes hold the second position in the Metropolitan Division, boasting a 28-15-5 record and trailing the New York Rangers by only two points. They have a strong 8-2-1 record since the beginning of 2024.
