On Friday evening, the girls basketball team from Cardinal Gibbons achieved another milestone by remaining undefeated in conference play and securing the Cap 6 Conference championship after completing the regular season.

The Crusaders emerged victorious with a score of 51-37 against Leesville Road, securing the title of Cap 6 Conference tournament champions at Broughton’s Holliday Gymnasium.

The beginning of the championship game was not very active in terms of scoring, but Cardinal Gibbons was able to take the lead of 14-7 in the first quarter thanks to three three-pointers made by Kaylee Fitzsimmons.

During the second quarter, Cardinal Gibbons maintained their advantage and went into halftime with a score of 26-19 over the Pride. However, it was in the third quarter that the Crusaders were able to increase their lead. With Charlotte Fusco scoring eight points, they outscored Leesville Road 15-8 and extended their lead to 41-27.

The score remained the same in the final quarter, with both teams earning 10 points. Cardinal Gibbons ultimately secured a 14-point victory.

Fusco was the top scorer for Cardinal Gibbons with a total of 19 points, followed by Fitzsimmons with 15 points. They were the only players from Cardinal Gibbons to reach double digits in scoring.

Finley Lewis was the only player from Leesville Road to score in double digits, with a total of 12 points.

Cardinal Gibbons and Leesville Road placed first and second, respectively, in the Cap 6 regular season standings. They will both receive automatic bids to the state playoffs when brackets are announced on Saturday afternoon.

Following their victory in the Cap 6 championship, Cardinal Gibbons’ overall record is now 19-7 and they have secured 13 consecutive wins. According to the most recent HighSchoolOT Playoff Projections, the Crusaders are expected to claim the No. 7 seed in the 4A East division and will face off against No. 26 Cary in the first round as the host team.

Leesville Road currently has a 16-6 record. According to HighSchoolOT, the Pride is expected to be seeded at No. 21 in the 4A East division and will face off against No. 12 New Hanover in the initial round.
